Chinese Elm are a semi-deciduous classic bonsai species. They will hold onto their leaves in warm winter climates and drip them in cold winter climates. This is the normal seedling variety, not the corkbark cultivar. Ulmus chinensis has a flaky bark, alternating leaves and vigorous growth. Defoliation and cutback can lead to very fine and intricate twig patterns and quickly create a canopy of foliage to complement your trunk.
Suitable for creating both tiny and large specimens, these 1 year-old's are still flexible enough to wire. 6-12" tall.
Packet of 5 seedlings. Mature Trees pictured are for illustration of the species only.
What to do when you receive bare-root trees:
- Option 1: Most of our trees are young and have a small amount of soil around the roots. Tease the trees apart and plant them upon receipt in your preferred soil mix. Protect the trees from conditions below 32F until spring. Keeping them in the 32-40F range is ideal. You can also "force" them by keeping them in a warmer place to initiate growth but any freezing temperatures then risk killing new growth.
- Option 2: Place a small amount of soil into the bag around the roots, reseal it and keep it in your fridge until deciduous trees in your area are beginning to leaf out in spring. Then follow option 1. Be sure to check that the soil doesn't entirely dry out in the fridge. The roots should not be submerged in water but kept constantly moist.
